| Abstract | A program in Quincy, Massachusetts, is designed to teach nonhandicapped fourth grade students to understand what it is like to have a handicap. The six 45-minute units include an introductory puppet presentation as well as units on physical disabilities, mental retardation, learning disabilities, visual handicaps, and deafness. Puppets provide interest and a common introductory experience for the students. A curriculum that accompanies the units lists cognitive and affective objectives along with information on materials and sequencing of the lesson. Pre- and posttests were developed as a modification of the Attitudes Toward Handicapped Individuals scale. The program employs specialists (such as therapists and teachers of the mentally retarded and visually handicapped). Of the 119 students who participated in the program, 60 percent improved their posttest scores. (CL) |
